New Heritage: Album Release

New Heritage“ Contemporary Compositions for Gagaku Instruments is coming out on Bandcamp! My trio piece “Onibi“ is included along with the pieces by Alan Hovahness, Fabio Rambelli, and Julius Eastman.

This trio is the result of an intercontinental collaboration between three musicians with different backgrounds but united for their love of classical Japanese Gagaku and its possibilities in terms of new music. New Heritage includes some of the earliest contemporary compositions for Gagaku instruments, the two Sonatas by Alan Hovhaness, exciting new music by Masatora Goya and Fabio Rambelli, and an astonishing rendition of Julius Eastman’s Buddha in an adaptation for double woodwind trio. This is the world premiere recording of all these compositions.

Ancient Instruments, New Sounds: Contemporary Compositions for Gagaku Instruments

My tiro piece “Onibi“ for ryuteki, hichiriki, and sho will be performed at UC Santa Barbara. I’m planning to visit the campus. Please check it out!

Gagaku is the ceremonial music of the imperial court and the major Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines of Japan, recognized by UNESCO as the oldest continuously performed orchestral music in the world. Gagaku has long been known for its ancient inter-Asian translocal nature and its rich vernacular traditions. It is less known that since the 1960s, composers all around the world, beginning in the US, have been writing new music for Gagaku instruments, either based on traditional techniques or as ways to explore new possibilities and develop a new musical language. Lish Lindsey (ryūteki), Thomas Piercy (hichiriki), and Fabio Rambelli (shō) perform works by Alan Hovhaness, John Cage, and more recent original pieces, as well as selections from the classical repertory. Join us for this beautiful and unexpected concert. Organized by Fabio Rambelli, International Shinto Foundation Professor of Shinto Studies, UCSB.

Light Year 89: Perspective/Reflective

I did the music for the video installation by Yuki Ideguchi and Suguru Ikeda! It’ll be projected on the wall of Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn, as well as online on Facebook.

Curated by Leo Kuelbs

Participating Artists: Eszter Szabo, Jesse Fleming, Philipp Geist, Richard Jochum, Robert Seidel, Yuki Ideguchi & Suguru Ikeda

SPECIAL GUEST: Tracey Snelling with Arthur Debert in Berlin, Toronto and ONLINE!

Perspective/Reflective is the natural response to Reflective/Perspective, a multi-artist event which took place at the German Film Museum in 2015, presented by Leo Kuelbs Collection. Reflective/Perspective dealt with how changes in perspective can alter meaning.

Perspective/Reflective illuminates the same issues by considering several similar works, but from a different vantage point in time. Indeed, questions of how time, life events, as well as space/site (museum vs. public art setting), and changes in format impact meaning and experience are all valid.

Since 2015, many unexpected and exceptional events have occurred. None of them were foreseen when Reflective/Perspective was conceived, created and presented. Perspective/Reflective allows the reoccurring works a chance to breathe again in a new setting, thus enriching the lives of the objects; and allowing a response to time’s relentless creation of infinite narratives. Many of the original works will be evolved for this new setting, on the Manhattan Bridge and elsewhere, while other artists and works will be added to create greater depth and further articulate the concept.
