Masatora wins the American Prize!

I’m delighted to share the news that MANAS for shakuhachi, cello, and piano has been selected as a winner of the American Prize, 2022, in the professional instrumental chamber music division! Tremendous thanks to the Kyo-Shin-An Arts for the commission and the music marvels James Nyoraku Schlefer, Hikaru Tamaki, and Kathleen Supové. Without your passion and dedication, this would never have happened. I’ve got even a press on the Broadway World!

This award means a lot to me that my decade-long struggle now feels worthwhile after all. MANAS was the first piece that I felt I was able to fully integrate my influences and present them as an organic expression. At the same time, it gave me many insights how I can keep composing for the next decade. I will keep exploring new possibilities and my own way to synthesize different aesthetics.

Last but not least, since I came to the US as a complete novice I had warm and kind supports from many people and mentors at NJCU, BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, and Five Towns College. Especially late Dr. Annette LeSiege was one of the strongest motivators to push me for the compositional career. Her untimely death before seeing any of my achievements still saddens me to this day. She told me that not the school I attend, but the music I write alone can show me the way. Thanks for your wisdom, Dr. LeSiege. I will keep paddling in the creative ocean.
